We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year and up to the end of Term 3, 2028. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

The Role

As an Education Assistant - Special Needs, you will under teacher direction, assist in the education programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Education assistants will assist teachers in the delivery of planned education programs to assist students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social, emotional, and physical skills including the operation of computers and digital technologies. Within this role, suitable applicants would provide feedback when required on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals in special education.

Herne Hill PS supports students with a diverse range of learning, social, emotional, physical and medical needs. Education Assistants work across a variety of settings, with some students requiring individual support, while others participate in targeted small group interventions in literacy, numeracy and social skills.

As part of our commitment to evidence informed practice, the school has recently implemented MiniLit Sage as a Tier 2 literacy intervention and continues to develop targeted support programs that enable every student to thrive.

Education Assistants play a key role in supporting students to achieve the goals outlined in documented plans, including Documented Plans and other personalised learning programs. Suitable applicants should be able to work collaboratively with teachers to implement agreed adjustments, monitor student progress and provide feedback that informs ongoing planning and review.

  • Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
