The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability (SSEND) is seeking to establish a pool of dedicated, enthusiastic and dynamic Consulting Teachers from all phases of learning including Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary schooling for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2027 School year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability
SSEND is an integral part of the Western Australian Department of Education’s Statewide Services and provides support for students with disability. Our values are Inclusion and Equity, Integrity and Honesty, Commitment and Professionalism, Collaboration and Communication, and Innovation and Independence.
SSEND is part of a federation of eight Specialist Schools within the Department of Education, inclusive of the four schools of Special Educational Need: the School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEND: BE), the School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health (SSEN:MMH), the School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEND:S) and the School of Special Educational Needs: Disability (SSEND). Significant collaboration occurs between the Specialist Schools to coordinate support for schools and, where possible, sharing of resources, expertise, professional learning and complex case management.
At SSEND we partner with schools and communities to deliver an effective, responsive and integrated service that supports students with additional needs to achieve their potential. Support is provided statewide through a Request for Assistance model that matches the needs of schools to the skill set of Consulting Teachers. SSEND have staff located across Western Australia.
Vacancies may arise in various locations across the state, aligned to the business needs of SSEND. As part of the application process, you will be able to identify preferred working locations. Experience of teaching students with disability in mainstream and/or education support settings is highly desired. The role of the consulting teacher is to coach and support other educators to improve outcomes for students. As SSEND provide targeted support, knowledge across one or more of the following areas is highly preferred Autism, Physical Disability, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), Disability High Support (DHS), Assistive Technology (AT) and/or Complex Communication Needs (CCN).
SSEND also oversee the training, support and development of the Specialist Learning Programs (SLPs). SLPs provide individualised, neurodiversity affirming support that fosters academic growth, social-emotional development, and holistic well-being. By addressing barriers to learning and engagement, SLPs support autistic students to achieve positive outcomes throughout their school journey. SSEND supports SLPs both systemically and operationally through individual and whole-school Requests for Assistance.
SSEND is a school that strives for excellence and is committed to building the capability of teachers and school-based staff within a culture of support to ensure every student with a disability is a successful student. Consulting Teachers collaborate with schools to provide a range of supports within these specialist areas including, but not limited to:
- Delivering professional learning for staff on disability and inclusive education related topics across the state.
- Advice and information on disability including policy, legislation, planning and reporting requirements.
- Consultation and collaboration with School Leadership Teams, Case Managers, Teachers and Education Assistants in meeting the educational needs of individual students with disability. This is through evidence informed strategies and interventions, including direct work with students, modelling of strategies, coaching of staff and provision of resources.
- Partnerships with school administrators in developing school-wide processes and guidelines to improve outcomes for students with disability.
