About the WAEC

Western Australia is a great place to live, work and deliver elections. And it is getting better as we transform the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) into a contemporary leader in electoral service, modernising systems, strengthening capability and lifting the experience for voters and stakeholders.

Trust in democracy depends on more than secure ballots. It depends on the records, decisions and information behind them being handled with the same rigour, care and transparency the public expects. That is where you come in.

At WAEC, we are guided by four values: Make it Count, Check Every Box, Focus on Fairness and Achieve Together. We are committed to recruiting people whose behaviours, leadership style and approach to public service align with these values, recognising that cultural contribution is as important as technical capability.

If you want to help build the frameworks that keep WAEC accountable, lawful and trusted from the inside out, this is your moment.

The Opportunity

As the Assistant Director Information Governance, you will shape and lead a new function at the heart of WAEC’s accountability, transparency and public trust. This is an opportunity to build practical frameworks for privacy and responsible information sharing, records management, documentation management, and freedom of information, while leading a capable team and embedding good practice across the Commission.

You will provide trusted advice on complex and sensitive matters, establish policies, procedures and controls, and help business areas manage information lawfully, consistently and confidently. You will also oversee FOI processes, support implementation of privacy and responsible information sharing reforms, and strengthen the systems and guidance that underpin sound decision making.

If you are energised by building something from the ground up, developing people, lifting organisational capability and turning complex obligations into clear, practical ways of working, this role offers genuine scope to make a lasting impact.

The role sits within the Integrity, Risk & Governance Directorate and reports to the Director Integrity, Risk & Governance.

About You

You are a practical, values-driven information governance professional who can bring structure, clarity and momentum to a new function. You understand public sector accountability obligations across freedom of information, privacy and responsible information sharing, records management and related information governance requirements, and can translate them into clear advice, workable controls and sustainable ways of working.

You will be confident leading people, building effective services and improving practice in a new or changing environment. Just as importantly, you will be a trusted adviser who can work constructively with leaders and teams, provide sound advice on complex or sensitive matters, and build confidence in good information governance across WAEC.

Your approach will align with WAEC’s values: making every contribution count, checking the detail, focusing on fairness and achieving outcomes together. You will bring strong judgement, analytical thinking and a constructive, solutions-focused approach, with a commitment to integrity, impartial public service and the trust WAEC is here to safeguard.

Relevant qualifications or professional accreditation in information governance, records management, information management, law, public administration or a related discipline would be well regarded, but your ability to lead, influence and deliver practical outcomes will be key.

Specific details of the role can be found in the Position Description attached to this advert.
