About Aboriginal History WA

Aboriginal History WA manages access to restricted government records created by previous agencies responsible for Aboriginal affairs in Western Australia. Using these records, the unit undertakes expert archival and genealogical research to assist Aboriginal applicants seeking historical family information.   

The unit also uses specialist research skills for strategic truth telling projects, providing an in-depth understanding of the Aboriginal history of Western Australia and contribute to the shared healing and reconciliation journey.  

About the role

This is your opportunity to work with a dedicated team providing family history and other research services to the Aboriginal community and undertaking other historical projects.

Aboriginal History Research Services sits within the Aboriginal History WA (AHWA) unit and is responsible under the State Records Act 2000 for managing access to historical records of the Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority and its predecessor agencies.

  • The Administration Coordinator provides direct administrative support to the Director Aboriginal History WA. The role also provides a central coordinating and liaison point for the Aboriginal History Research Services business area, and a culturally appropriate, customer focused service, including face-to-face, oral and written communications.
  • The Research and Administration Officer undertakes research of genealogical, archival and historical material, creates genealogical charts and reports using specialist genealogy software, and assists in project management and supporting senior researchers. The role provides a culturally appropriate, customer‑focused service through face‑to‑face, oral and written communication while supporting clients to navigate unit procedures.

This pool is for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies that arise from / over the next 24 months.

Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments will be made as vacancies arise. Applicants appointed initially on a fixed term may be offered further extensions and/or permanent positions. Applicants found suitable for this recruitment pool may also be considered for 'similar' vacancies within CITS and the wider public sector which arise prior to the pool's closing date. 

We have multiple fixed term positions available with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. Job sharing arrangements will also be considered.

  • Well-developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, and experience in sensitively and respectfully communicating with Aboriginal Australians and/or diverse customer groups.
  • Demonstrated initiative, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information and a sound understanding of the ethical considerations involved in processing personal information.
  • Sound organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines.
