Position Profile
DPIRD Diagnostics and Laboratory Services, a branch within our Biosecurity directorate, are currently seeking to establish a pool of applicants for upcoming Veterinary Pathologist positions. The pool will be valid for a period of twelve (12) months following finalisation of the process and may be used to fill permanent and fixed term, full time and part time opportunities that may arise in this period. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you placement to a position.
Working as a veterinary pathologist or laboratory diagnostician within our DPIRD Diagnostics and Laboratory Services (DDLS) branch, you will be a recognised expert in veterinary pathology or a related laboratory discipline. Your role will encompass a wide range of laboratory disciplines including anatomic and clinical pathology, microbiology, parasitology, immunology and toxicology across terrestrial, avian and aquatic species with a focus on production animals.
You will have experience in delivering comprehensive disease investigation and case management services and contribute to the development of laboratory capability. Managing testing and interpreting results across a range of laboratory disciplines, your reports will contribute to improved clinical outcomes and the data will support WA’s animal disease surveillance aims.
Experience and relevant qualifications in the field of veterinary laboratory diagnostics (refer to JDF special requirements), test development and quality systems, as well as an understanding of reportable animal disease surveillance and reporting will be highly regarded.
Position profile
- At a recognised professional level, demonstrating leadership and team management expertise and superior initiative and judgement, undertakes veterinary pathologist or laboratory diagnostician duties.
- Utilises laboratory diagnostics expertise to conduct and oversee the investigation, diagnosis and reporting of animal diseases in veterinary species, including surveillance for emergency animal diseases, emerging diseases, residue incidents and endemic disease diagnosis.
- Performs complex gross and microscopic pathological examination of animal tissues, or related testing, case manages diagnostic submissions, interprets and integrates laboratory results and provides input into or drafts comprehensive reports to internal and external stakeholders.
- Contributes scientifically valid diagnostic and surveillance data to support WA and national animal health monitoring and market outcomes, including surveillance for conditions of state and national significance.

Eligibility / Other Conditions
Subject to appointment the successful applicant will be required to provide a valid satisfactory National Police Clearance.
A degree in Veterinary Science (obtained from an Australian university or recognised equivalent), and current recognised registration (or able to obtain prior to commencement) with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Western Australia – registration must be maintained whilst employed by the department.
Post-graduate qualifications in Veterinary Pathology or relevant field, recognised in Australia, equivalent to or exceeding Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS).
This position is located in South Perth.

- Build effective relationships: Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to confidently liaise, collaborate with and communicate scientific information to departmental staff, industry and the community.
- Think strategically: Well developed research, conceptual and analytical skills including the ability to provide innovative solutions to complex and challenging issues and problems.
SCL4
- Significant knowledge and experience in clinical veterinary pathology including performance and oversight of pathology examinations; selecting specimens for diagnostic laboratory testing and interpreting and applying laboratory data in disease diagnosis.
- Build effective relationships: Highly-developed and effective written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to confidently liaise, collaborate with and communicate scientific information to departmental staff, industry and the community. Must be able to integrate, interpret and explain complex technical information in a digestible form, readily shareable to a wider audience.
- Substantial experience leading a team of laboratory professionals to fulfil diagnostic and surveillance objectives, including mentoring of staff.
