The position is ideally suited for an applicant who is to apply strategic planning to support the school principal to enact the school vision. The successful applicant will work as a member of our Executive Team, the school Leadership Team and school staff to ensure positive progress and outcomes for students. The applicant will have a strong capacity to develop others and ability to implement and refine school systems, work with others to ensure quality procedures, review performance data with a focus on strategic intent and improving outcomes. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the ability to use data analysis and lines of inquiry processes to inform evidence based and well managed change with a focus on student progress. The applicant will be able to demonstrate a capacity to build teams which have successful academic and social emotional outcomes for students. Flexibility and persistence will be key qualities. The successful applicant will be focused on success for all students.
About the role
A focus on developing successful teaching, learning and assessment practices in the context of a regional school, strengthening connections and ensuring the school provides a range of learning opportunities for all students is an integral part of the role. An important part of the deputy principal role includes strategically improving approaches to student socio-emotional wellbeing and student resilience. The capacity to work strategically and operationally simultaneously will be well regarded.
The successful applicant will be knowledgeable about Western Australian Certificate of Education and Western Australian Curriculum requirements, as well as innovative approaches to increasing retention to Year 12. Initially, the position will focus on student support and wellbeing, and a portfolio focus on Years 7-9. The flexibility to consider all elements of the deputy principal role, including the outcomes outlined in the JDF, is important.
About us
Newman Senior High School opened in 1974. The school caters for approximately 300 students in Years 7 to 12. The Newman Way values of Care and Compassion, Respect and Responsibility are central to our school culture. Our vision is to build a distinctive local school which is the jewel in the Iron Heart of the Pilbara.
The school’s staff members are key to the success of the school. Many staff members are in their first teaching or leadership position. The school’s Leadership Team focuses on developing capacity in all staff members. The school has high quality buildings and facilities, including a new Quantitative Sciences and Student Services Hub which opened in 2017, and an Engineering/Metals Trade Training Centre. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
- High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
- Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
- Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
