About the role
This is a pool recruitment process for Chefs at Broome Regional Prison over a 12 month period. There is currently an 8-month VSO3 Chef Instructor fixed term opportunity available with a possibility of extension and/or permanency.
The Chef positions at Broome Prison are responsible for the production of meals, training and supervision of prisoners involved in food preparation, control of the food budget, development and implementation of the menus within the Departments guidelines. They instruct and supervise prisoners in cooking, baking and pastry making skills while ensuring that the kitchen area complies with Health and OH&S regulations.
The Chef staff are rostered to work on a rotational swing for 10-hour shifts, 8 days on and 6 days off.
Applicants will be required to meet the following pre-appointment requirements:
- Complete the Employment Profile Assessment as determined by the DCS Recruitment Psychologist;
- Receive a clearance through a National Criminal History check and the Departmental integrity assessment;
- Possess a current ‘C’ class motor vehicle driver’s license;
- Possess a valid Senior First Aid Qualification (or equivalent) received from an accredited training provider and;
- Be willing to undertake training applicable to the role through the Department’s Training Academy.

Pool Recruitment
The Department of Justice use recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities. When part of a pool you may be offered a permanent or temporary position, however an appointment is not guaranteed.
This pool will be open for a period of 12 months from the date of first appointment. Permanent and fixed-term full-time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise.
