The Finance and Commercial Services Division is seeking to recruit a highly motivated, skilled and committed Principal Financial Accountant in the Financial Services branch.
The Principal Financial Accountant will coordinate Departmental statutory reporting obligations, including preparing, presenting and reviewing complex financial reports to meet State and Commonwealth requirements. Various reports also include service costings and efficiency indicators. Financial Reports are accompanied by a briefing to Senior Executive and sometimes to the Minister to explain results and variations in a clear, concise and useful manner, prepared by the Principal Financial Accountant. The position requires significant consultation and collaboration with other work colleagues and key stake-holders.
The successful applicant will oversee the preparation, review and maintenance of the Department’s chart of accounts, consolidation and elimination process (with public schools, residential colleges and other education support entities) and provides input into special projects including the development of appropriate costing models and improvement / streamlining of the reporting process as and when required.
The successful applicant will liaise with professional bodies and associations and representatives of the Department of Treasury and Department of Finance, the Office of the Auditor General and the Australian Taxation Office, ensuring that developments in accounting standards and financial legislation are properly evaluated and adopted by the Department and distributed.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills including negotiation, facilitation and consultation skills and the ability to liaise with individuals at all levels.
- Substantial experience in preparing and consolidating accrual financial statements in a large organisation.
- Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to complex problems and perform complex financial modelling.
- Substantial knowledge and understanding of legislation, accounting standards, government policy and emerging issues relating to financial management and statutory reporting, including a thorough understanding of the Australian equivalent to the International Financial Reporting Standards and Treasurer’s Instructions.
- Highly developed skills and experience in providing leadership and managing people effectively.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- hold relevant tertiary qualifications in an accounting or related discipline and eligibility for membership of a professional accounting body; and
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
