North Cottesloe Primary School is seeking a vibrant and team oriented educational leader. For this pro-active role, it is expected that the successful applicant will be highly motivated and possess the qualities needed to bring people together. The successful applicant will be an energetic person who can articulate a shared vision for the school - a person with highly developed interpersonal skills to engage staff, students and community in purposeful change. A key role will be to maintain the direction of the current External Review Group school improvement agenda whilst enhancing the rigour of, and the necessary accountability processes for ensuring, its effective implementation.
They will:
- create and sustain effective professional learning communities within the school, and across all levels of the system;
- build networks with other agencies, other schools, and services in the community to benefit school programs and facilities. This school leader will model ethical, respectful and professional behaviours and maintain the well-established strong community spirit of the school;
- build strong relationships between staff, students and parents that are positive and supportive;
- ideally have a proven history of successful and visionary leadership in a school, demonstrating highly developed skills to initiate, lead and manage educational change ensuring continuous school improvement;
- enlist the skills and talents of staff in this endeavour through a model of distributed leadership; and
- be a compassionate and innovative instructional leader with the ability to inspire, lead, and deliver initiatives and strategies that develop capacity within staff and promote staff collaboration to improve student learning.
The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
We seek an individual whose attributes encompass:
- embracing the “Classroom First” strategy;
- understanding of current curriculum requirements;
- embracing the integration of ICT into the curriculum;
- optimising outcomes in literacy and numeracy for all students;
- valuing, developing and mentoring staff; optimising the school’s financial, physical and human resources through sound management practices and organisational systems and processes that contribute to the implementation of the school’s vision and goals;
- modelling important values and behaviours to the school and community, including a commitment to creating and sustaining effective professional learning communities within the school, and across all levels of the system; and
- understanding and leading the school community in promoting a vision for the future, underpinned by common purposes and values that will secure the commitment and alignment of stakeholders to realise the potential of all students.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the three leadership requirements and five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:
- Effective leadership in teaching and learning
- Developing self and others
- Leading improvement, innovation and change
- Leading the management of the school
- Engaging and working with the community

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
