ChemCentre provides a comprehensive range of scientific services, working with a wide range of clients including Government Agencies, universities, environmental consultants, primary producers, exporters, retailers and the general public. The range of services allows ChemCentre clients to demonstrate the safety, quality and environmental impact of their products and practices.
ChemCentre are seeking to fill two positions. One position as a Scientist (Chemist) on a permanent basis and one other position which may be as a Scientist (Chemist) or (Chemist and Research Officer) on a fixed term basis. Suitable applicants may be considered for future similar employment opportunities during the next six (6) months which may include permanent or fixed term positions
These positions are in the Emergency Response Section of the Scientific Services Division. The Section provides scientific services pertinent to areas of hazardous materials (HAZMAT). A key and mandatory component of this position is participation on a 24/7 roster providing scientific advice to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and other Government agencies during a HAZMAT/CBR incident. Physical requirements for the position include the requirement to wear self-contained breathing apparatus. We also undertake high level HAZMAT/CBR applied research and investigative projects.
Our capabilities include:
- 24/7 HAZMAT/CBR response in support of DFES & other Government agencies

- Laboratory and Field analysis of hazardous materials
- Identification of unknown solids, liquids and gases/vapours
Appointment to either Specified Calling Level 1 ($66,165 - $90,345) or Specified Calling Level 2 ($92,548 - $102,179) will be dependent on your overall level of qualifications, skills and experience.
To undertake this role successfully as Specified Calling Level 1, you require:
- Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) or approved equivalent degree.
- Demonstrated ability to operate and recognise limitations of a range of scientific analytical equipment and the interpretation of results including GC, MS, LC and a range of spectroscopic techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team to apply scientific knowledge to develop analytical methods and response procedures in order to solve complex chemistry related issues in a Hazmat/CBR or dangerous goods context.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret scientific data to clients in a professional manner by preparing incident response reports and delivering oral presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training activities in the area of Hazmat/CBR and Dangerous Goods.
To undertake this role successfully as Specified Calling Level 2, you require:
- Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) or approved equivalent degree.
- Demonstrated experience in the operation and recognition of limitations of a range of scientific analytical equipment and the interpretation of results including GC, MS, LC and a range of spectroscopic techniques.
- Demonstrated experience of working in a team to apply scientific knowledge to develop analytical methods and response procedures in order to solve complex chemistry related issues in a Hazmat/CBR or dangerous goods context.
- Demonstrated experience in interpreting complex scientific dataand providing explanations to clients in a professional manner by preparing incident response reports and delivering oral presentations.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering training activities in the area of Hazmat/CBR and Dangerous Goods.
