Health Services in the Department of Justice provides healthcare services in the 15 public prisons across Western Australia to a diverse patient group. The Department of Justice (the Department) works to ensure a safer community by focussing on the security and safety of detainees and offenders, and on the safety of our people.
The principle of equivalence of care in prison medicine requires that the quality and standard of health care provided to prisoners is the same as that provided in the community through the public health system. The service is accredited against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for Health Services in Australian Prisons demonstrating our commitment to providing high quality safe and effective patient care.
This is a recruitment pool for fixed term, full and part time appointments up to 5 years with contract extensions based on business needs. The Department offers a number of amazing employee benefits including:

Vacancies currently exist in various metropolitan and outer metropolitan areas including Wooroloo, Canning Vale, Guildford, Bentley, Serpentine and Casuarina. In regional areas vacancies exist at Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Greenough and Roebourne which would suit local doctors.
Level/Salary: In accordance with AMA Agreement 2016 pa pro rata
Vocationally Registered General Practitioner (Yr 1-5) - $248,113 - $282,691 per annum pro rata
Health Service Medical Practitioner (Yr 1-3) -$240,526 - $256,330 per annum pro rata
Role
Working in a primary care setting, as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Prison Medical Officer functions in accordance with the Prisons Act 1981 by providing high quality general medical management in a primary health care setting, to male and female patients across the adult and juvenile custodial estates. The Prison Medical Officer also provides out of hours advice through a rostered on-call system.
The Prison Medical Officer works closely with health centre staff (nurses, receptionists and allied health) and prison staff in planning, organising and managing the provision of health care. Clinics are held either in person or using telehealth dependent on site location.
Job related requirements
Evidence of registration with the Medical Board of Australia is required.
Applicants must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for this to be eligible for appointment to some pool positions.
