Hedland Senior High School seeks an exceptional educator with proven leadership skills and an understanding of all aspects of school management in a senior high school.
The applicant’s resume should reflect the context of the school by describing their vision for building sustainable school success. This should include; the applicant’s skills in leading organisational cultural change, their demonstrated commitment to public accountability together with a contemporary appreciation of school governance in a unique school environment.
It is critical that the Principal is able to lead and guide, to motivate and mentor, and to build the capacity of all staff in planning and improving the educational achievement standards for all students.
Therefore, to be successful for this position, the applicant needs to be a skilled communicator, a passionate advocate for regional public education and have a robust appreciation of the need to build quality relational partnerships with local community and industry groups. A commitment to implementing the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework is essential.
The applicant needs to demonstrate the three leadership requirements of:
- vision and values
- knowledge and understanding
- personal qualities, social and interpersonal skills
- as enacted through the five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:
- Effective leadership in teaching and learning

- Engaging and working with the community

Port Hedland is approximately 1700kms from Perth and has a culturally diverse population, spread between two centres about 20 kms apart. South Hedland has a population of just over 9000 and Port Hedland over 5000. Hedland Senior High School is situated in South Hedland and attracts students from five primary schools; Baler, Cassia, Port Hedland, South Hedland and St Cecelia’s (a private school). While student enrolments have been over 800 for the past 4 years, the transient nature of work in the mining industry means there is a significant turnover of students during the year.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for fixed term or permanent appointments to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.
ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
