The South Metropolitan Education Region is seeking to appoint a dedicated and dynamic Lead School Psychologist (LSP). In joining a large team of LSP’s who work in a collaborative, self-managing environment, the successful applicant will have demonstrated effective team work skills across a range of settings. The successful applicant will also be able to engage with strategic planning, take a lead role in a portfolio area, and create collaborative, cross regional relationships. The position will be based at Bentley Primary School, in the LSP Hub, or another Hub by negotiation.
As a Lead School Psychologist in South Metro you will be school based, part of a self-directed team and directly accountable to the Regional Executive Director. You will also be professionally accountable to the Manager, School Psychology Service. Your practice will be guided and directed by Departmental policies and guidelines and the Psychology Board of Australia’s professional standards. The Lead School Psychologist provides leadership and access to professional support and learning for all school psychologists, including ensuring professional supervision for provisionally registered psychologists to achieve standards outlined in the Competency Framework for School Psychologists. The position assures the quality of all School Psychologists’ practice meets the professional standards of the Department and the Psychology Board of Australia and also leads in the provision of contemporary psychological practices. Broad experience and capacity to provide leadership across all core areas of the service (mental health, learning, behaviour and disability) will be advantageous.
The successful applicant will ensure effective deployment of school psychologists and access to specialist school psychology resources as well as provide direct advice to the Regional Executive Director, Principals and the system in the assessment and response to complex issues and situations, including emergency and critical incident management. You will also provide leadership in the development and implementation of appropriate programs, interventions and evaluations at all levels, including facilitation of systemic change and provide critical evaluation on issues impacting on the School Psychology Service.
The South Metropolitan Education Region encapsulates an area along the coast from the City of Fremantle, along the Swan River to the City of Belmont, through the hills taking in the Shire of Kalamunda, extending to the eastern most point of the City of Armadale and southern most point to the Shire of Waroona, back to the coast in the city of Mandurah. The regional office is located in Fremantle. The Region ranges from suburban to semi-rural and rural land and essentially covers the southern side of the Perth metro area. There are 253 public schools located in the South Metropolitan Education Region in 2016. This includes 181 Primary Schools, 44 Secondary Schools, 24 Education Support Centres, 2 Specialist Schools, 3 Language Development Centres, and 6 Intensive English Centres located within schools catering to the needs of primary and secondary students.
Sixty five percent of schools are Independent Public Schools (95% of secondary schools in 2016). The South Metropolitan Education Region is the largest (by student enrolments) in the state. In 2016 South Metro was allocated approximately 84 School Psychologist FTE, with service being provided by approximately 130 people. At times you may be required to assist psychologists and principals in locations across the South Metropolitan Education Region as the need arises.The successful applicants will be capable of developing a team of School Psychologists and lead the professional development and practice standards of psychologists with a range of experience from ASSP and Senior School Psychologist to newly provisionally registered. The region supports a significant number of provisionally registered psychologists requiring all LSP’s to play a role in the supervision process. Part-time preferences will be considered.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be appointed to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:
- Highly-proficient skills and the application of scientific practitioner models that contribute to system-level understandings and decision making.
- Application of exemplary specialist knowledge and skills and the provision of leadership in the development of programs and interventions.
- Ability to clarify and communicate complex concepts and provide feedback and critical evaluation on the school psychology profession, system policy, direction and operation.
- Leadership of strategic partnerships to build capacity, influence systemic policy and undertake interventions and prevention programs.
- Leadership and engagement in a variety of professional activities that indicate critical self-reflection, flexibility, exemplary practice and the development of learning communities.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- hold general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and be eligible to be employed as a School Psychologist in Western Australia;
- have achieved Advanced Skills School Psychologist status;
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check

TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
