The Department of Fisheries manages Western Australia’s fish, marine and the freshwater fisheries and the habitats on which they depend. We aspire to be recognised and respected by the WA community for our leadership in fisheries and aquatic resource management. The Department’s purpose is to deliver sustainable management and development of the State’s fisheries and aquatic resources by being responsive, resilient and results-focused.
There is currently one (1) Level 4 GIS Officer position available for filling on a permanent full-time basis.
OTHER CONDITIONS
Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies throughout this region.
Should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised vacancy, then the next most suitable applicant may also be selected from this process. This option remains valid for a period of six (6) months from the end of the review period.
Position Profile:

The role of the GIS Officer is to:
- Provide a mapping service for the provision of high quality cartographic mapping products for reports and presentations.
- Capture, maintain and validate Departmental custodial datasets.
- Assist with the development and upkeep of guidelines for data capture procedures.
- Assist with facilitating and conducting basic GIS training and provision of help desk services to Departmental staff as required.
- Facilitate agency spatial data exchange.
Fisheries Head Office is currently located in the Atrium Building Perth, but by mid 2017 we will have relocated to the Gordon Stephenson House building which is in the heart of the CBD. The new location is right above the Perth Underground Train Station and close to the new Roe Street Bus Station, with Transperth and CAT buses stopping nearby. Our new accommodation will include a modern state of the art open plan environment, access to video conferencing, a shared social club area, opportunity to join existing health & fitness classes, and end of trip facilities for any avid bike riders. WORK RELATED REQUIREMENTS
Applicants are required to submit a comprehensive CV and address the following four (4) Essential Work Related Requirements from the JDF in no more than two (2) pages:
- Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated organisational and analytical skills.
- Proven ability to produce digital cartographic maps and dataset products including knowledge of datums, projections and transformations.
- Proven ability to capture and maintain departmental corporate datasets.
