The Western Australian Museum is positioning itself through scientific and academic excellence, public programs and relevant exhibitions to keep pace with the rapidly changing face of Western Australia. The Museum has made a major contribution to the collection, conservation and research of the State’s natural and social history, maritime heritage and the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities in Western Australia.
The Western Australian Museum is part of the Culture and Arts Portfolio, brought together by the Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA). DCA is the State Government agency responsible for the Government’s support of management and development of arts and culture in Western Australia.
Conditions
This is a part time (0.6FTE or 45 hours per fortnight), fixed term vacancy, for a period of 12 months, with a possibility of extension and/or permanency. There will also be a Pool running for a period of 18 months from the initial appointment. Applicants deemed suitable will be placed into a pool from which full-time, part-time, fixed term or permanent appointments may be made.
A current (within 6 months) National Police Clearance Certificate and a Working With Children Clearance will be required prior to commencement of employment, as per the Department of Culture and the Arts Police Record Screening Policy.
You must have a degree or higher level qualification in Education to be considered for this position. All overseas qualifications must have been assessed for Australian equivalency.
Experience in science communication/development would be advantageous.
Location
This position is located in historic Fremantle, close to the bustling cafe strip, tourist sights and the modern new Maritime Museum.
Job Description
The Education Officer’s primary role is to enhance the Museum’s profile through the development, implementation and evaluation of high quality programs, experiences and resources that are relevant to the collection at the Western Australian Museum (metropolitan sites). For this purpose, the Education Officer is required to become familiar with the content of the exhibitions and collections in the Museum.
The Education Officer plays an active part in the creation of experiences which enhance and extend the Museum visit for school groups and education professionals.The core audiences for this role include early childhood, middle childhood and secondary students, as well as teachers, ESL and special needs groups. The position may also work with audiences outside of formal school education.
The position operates within the Museum strategic plan and within the parameters set by the Manager, Learning and Creativity. The Education Officer is part of the Learning and Creativity team, and works under the direction of the Education Manager.
