The Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) are looking for a Plant Pathologist to be part of the Plant Pathology diagnostic team within theDAFWA Diagnostic Laboratory Services. This is your opportunity to increase productivity, profitability and market access for the horticultural and grains industries through improved diagnostic capacity and capability for detection of plant diseases.
In this role you will use a range of techniques, including traditional morphological, serological and molecular assays, to identify plant pathogens from diverse plant species and also develop and validate further molecular methods. You will also deliver a rapid, accurate and reliable diagnostic service for plant pathogens on a diverse range of plant species to clients including primary producers (e.g. farmers, nursery owners), agricultural and horticultural professionals (e.g. crop consultants), other industry stakeholders (e.g. seed exporters, researchers) and home gardeners.
Key responsibilities include:
- Liaising directly with clients to ensure their needs are met;
- Ongoing improvement, development and validation of testing protocols with a focus on molecular diagnostics;
- Assist with the implementation of a quality system and LIMS into plant pathology at a reduced cost risk; and
- Assist to minimise biosecurity risks from plant pathogen incursions that threaten WA`s horticultural and grains industries through surveillance activities.
The successful applicant will have experience in and knowledge of Plant pathology (including mycology, bacteriology and virology) and also the development of molecular diagnostic tools for detection of plant pathogens.
A degree in Agricultural Science (or approved equivalent) is an essential pre-employment requirement.
An acceptable National Police Certificate (police clearance), or equivalent, is an essential pre-employment requirement. This police clearance must be obtained prior to employment at applicant’s expense.

Level Ranges: This role will suit a person at a professional level, with or without experience. The level of appointment upon commencement will depend on qualifications, skills and/or experience.
Specified Calling Level 1 $65,165 - $89,345 pa (Professional level with or without experience)
Specified Calling Level 2 $91,548 - $101,179 pa (Experienced professional level)
Specified Calling Level 3 $106,533 - $117,969 pa (Broadly recognised professional level)
Specified Calling Level 4 $121,885 - $130,636 pa (Nationally recognised professional level)
Location: South Perth.
