The Schools Resourcing and Support Directorate at the Department of Education is seeking a qualified and experienced person to fill the role of Principal Finance Consultant.
The Principal Finance Consultant assists in the evaluation, development, implementation and review of relevant resourcing policies, procedures and strategies, and participates in the ongoing identification of funding requirements. The position is also responsible for monitoring and providing advice on developments in financial legislation and government policy that may affect schools resourcing, financial reporting to schools or operation of schools’ one-line budget.
The successful applicant will analyse financial data and information and provide reports to assist in determining resource allocations for schools in accordance with the funding allocation mechanism. The Principal Finance Consultant will also oversee the development and maintenance of computer programs used for allocating and reporting on financial resources for schools.
The Schools Resourcing and Support Directorate is responsible for:
- developing and implementing the financial resource package for schools
- managing and monitoring the transfer of school funding through the School Allocation Module
- providing advice and support to schools on financial management including the one-line budget, accounting and financial reporting
- implementing the Government’s financial management reforms as they relate to reporting, legislative compliance, policy and financial advice.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be appointed to other similar vacancies that occur throughout our branch for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of relevant financial legislation and policy and extensive experience in financial management and reporting.
- Highly developed leadership and management skills with a proven ability in the coordination and delivery of a financial management service.
- Highly developed oral and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to liaise and negotiate effectively with individuals at all levels and in a range of contexts.
- Highly developed written communication and presentation skills, including extensive experience in the preparation of complex reports, Ministerial responses, briefing notes and policy development.
- Highly developed research, conceptual, analytical and risk management skills, including the ability to provide innovative solutions to strategic and complex problems and issues.
- Practical experience in financial analysis, data interpretation and financial models.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- Hold a recognised tertiary qualification in Accounting, Business, Finance or related area; and
- Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
- Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- Complete any training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
- Complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
