Our department is looking for a pro-active Veterinarian with excellent judgement to represent and protect our state and national interests in Livestock Biosecurity. This high level position will suit an influential Veterinarian with demonstrated resilience, professional authority, and confidence in making critical decisions in the face of resistance and adversity.
The Chief Veterinary Officer will play a leadership role in the development of Animal Health policy, animal disease control and eradication at a State and national level. You will also provide high level livestock expertise to our department, other government departments, key stakeholders and industry.
Key responsibilities include:
- Carries out statutory responsibilities under relevant legislation, including those of the Chief Veterinary Officer and reviews and makes recommendations on relevant biosecurity legislation
- Represents Western Australia on a range of National Animal Health Committees including Animal Health Committee (AHC), Animal Health Australia programs and the Consultative Committee on Emergency Animal Disease (CCEAD).
- Develop strategic animal health policies that build the States capacity to provide biosecurity services that underpin domestic and export market access for livestock and livestock product.
- Oversees, implements or provides advice to emergency responses; and
- Maintains national communications in relation to disease status and implements specific national animal health programs.
The successful applicant will have the demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with staff, stakeholders, and industry groups to achieve positive outcomes. You will also have significant experience in biosecurity policy and legislation development and have excellent leadership skills, judgement on complex matters and communication skills.
The ability to identify, promote and implement constructive, high level change to the benefit of animal health program outcomes is essential.
An acceptable National Police Certificate (police clearance), or equivalent, is an essential pre-employment requirement. This police clearance must be obtained prior to employment at applicant’s expense.
